Two New and Unique Eateries Opening this Week
People are always trying to come up with creative new ways to prepare and serve up food in this city. This week, two new places are opening up on Fillmore Street that will serve you tasty small plates from push carts (like dim sum restaurants) and Asian-influenced hot dogs.
Here’s the scoop on State Bird Provisions and Holy Dog:
State Bird Provisions
On Wednesday, Jan. 4, State Bird Provisions, a new restaurant that’s done away with formal menus by serving small plates dim-sum-style via carts and trays, opened its doors on Fillmore.
Here, if you see something you like on the carts and trays, point at it and it’s yours. There’s a roving rotation of 25 ready-to-eat dishes, from steelhead caviar and carnitas-stuffed squid to their signature fried quail (made famous in their Rubicon days) and crispy chocolate croquettes. And they’ve got a great selection of wines and beers to pair with your eats.
And what makes this place even more fun is its decor. Reminiscent of your old grade school days, the space is decked with pegboard walls, lockers and a drawing of a local school baseball team done with a Sharpie.
What’s even cooler is that if you’re in a hurry and want to grab food and go, just position yourself by the kitchen diagonally and you’ll be strategically located to get first dibs on the dishes that go by.
I’m so excited to try this place.

Holy Dog
Holy Dog is a colorful new Asian-influenced hot doggery that opened up this week on Fillmore Street, right next door to Korean BBQ joint, Nan (which is owned by the same guy).
Open on Fridays and Saturdays until 2:00 a.m., at Holy Dog you can get everything from their signature grilled dogs like the Chihuahua (chicken chorizo topped with beef chili, salsa, sour cream and jalapeño) or the Katsu (a deep-fried Italian link with wasabi mayo and mild peppers), the to the basic Sausage Platter, where you choose your favorite three hot dogs.
If you’re feeling like something either than a dog, there’s the marinated Spicy Pork Belly Burger with miso sauce, three different wing options, and nine types of fries including the Kiki (with wasabi/teriyaki mayo), the Kimchee Cheese and the Loco Moco, which are regular cuts topped with salsa fresca, cheese sauce, and a patty that’s been marinated in Hawaiian sauce for three days.
They’ve also got six premium drafts (like Fat Tire and Newcastle) to help you wash down all the deliciousness. I’m soooo there!
